This was my first John Puller book, and I liked it. Now I can go back and read the first two. A very good mystery and it flowed just right. Knocked in out in just about 5 days. I have read and enjoyed The Hit and The Target (Robbie) and based on my liking those stories jumped in when I had a chance to borrow this book from the digital library. Puller is a Warrant Officer (and I am a retired CW3) and part of the story took place right here in Lawton, Ok. 2 bonus points for the author. Does anyone know-are there any combination books? Where David Baldacci combines two or more of his characters in ONE story? Would love to read a Puller/Robbie thriller. Need to check out the Camel Club one of these days as well.

I have really liked the John Puller series from the beginning and really wanted to know more about Robert Puller. Well, this book delivers. Robert is John's older brother, who had worked in the intelligence field and who resided at Fort Leavenworth prison during the previous two books after being convicted of espionage. The escape in the title of the book refers to the escape of Robert from prison. The book is exciting with many twists. So much happens; the action is really non-stop. And that is a little bit of a problem. There is so much action that the narrative of what the bad guys are doing and how the good guys learn all of the story and what the full story is gets lost. Although John Puller learns of various events that have taken place throughout the book, we never really learn how it all started or why the central villain did everything that was alleged. We don't really ever understand how events occurred to lead up to the big crisis. Finally, certain occurrences are never adequately explained - what happened with Susan's husband and why, where did John's kidnappers disappear to, what exactly happened with Schindler, etc. These things are not critical to enjoying the thrill ride, but the ending is a little less satisfying due to this lack of understanding. The last few chapters are also somewhat abrupt, denying us full closure (and one scene is a bit manipulative), but I am hoping that the want of complete resolution means there will be at least one more John Puller book dealing with the story of John and Robert's mother. There is still a very real mystery extant. I look forward to the telling of that story very much. While this book stands alone, one is more invested in the story and more familiar with some of the characters, if one has read the prior two novels, Zero Day in particular. All in all, I enjoyed The Escape greatly and recommend it.

David Baldacci returns again this year with an exciting thriller, the third of his series featuring John Puller, a former war hero who is one of the best military investigators in the US Army's Criminal Investigative Division. This time Puller is faced with one of the most dangerous and controversial cases of his career - to find a maximum security prisoner from the Leavenworth Military Prison who has made a miraculous escape and left an unknown dead body in his cell. The case is controversial because the escapee is Puller's elder brother Bobby who was convicted by a military court of serious national security crimes.The first couple of chapters about how the escape happened set the scene for an absorbing and exciting chase to work out how and why the escape happened and to find and arrest Bobby. What is surprising is that a trio of top military brass ask Puller to find his brother and bring him back for justice especially as Bobby has an almost eidetic memory of important military secrets. Puller soon finds that the whole thing reeks of conspiracy at the highest level with possible overseas influence within the security agencies of the US. Also he is soon not sure if Bobby was actually guilty of the crimes for which he was imprisoned.Puller is normally a loner but he is forced to work with enigmatic (and of course attractive) US intelligence officer, Captain Veronica Knox who he has problems trusting. Of course she has problems trusting Puller, especially about how he will react when they finally hunt down his brother. The plot has many twists and turns and is great reading. As with other recent Baldacci thrillers the plot sometimes verges on the unbelievable but this time it doesn't go over the believability barrier too much.After The Forgotten (John Puller series Book 2) Baldacci has brought John Puller back from looking like a Jack Reacher clone to his military CID roots. Baldacci has the talent to create a number of very different and compelling lead characters and Puller is now towards the top of the list. My main reservation is that Puller is not as charismatic as some of the other ones - especially Oliver Stone and the Camel Club. The finale certainly sets the scene for an interesting return sometime later on.

Oh well! I write reviews for all books I read, so I won't skip this one. "Failure is not an option." Typical Baldacci writing! This Author really is a gift to readers who love a good story!From John's cat named "AWOL" to the mystery of how Robert managed to escape Leavenworth, you will not be bored! A great read!!

Either agile is so incredibly simple and intuitive that you don't need references on it (my fault then for purchasing this book) or this book oversimplifies the concepts. Many of the cards are similar to #39.Another aspect to consider is that this is NOT A BOOK. It is a collection of loose 5x7 index cards. I was aware of this but had hoped the content would make-up for the format, which I find to be cumbersome. How do you store a stack of index cards?I am now heading back to search for a better agile book or online references.

I've worked on agile teams for more than ten years. I'm amazed at the quality and quantity of information in this concise little deck of cards. Our ScrumMaster pulled out card #6, Courage, which includes "To always deliver quality work" and "To throw away unneeded code and tests". It was nice affirmation that we did the right thing.We put cards that interest us up on the task board to think about, and we plan to read and discuss a card at each team retrospective. They're a great learning tool for everyone from agile newbies to high-functioning, experienced teams.

And I found insights that were valuable to me, an experienced Agile coach, yet still accessible to those new to Agile.Jeff and Tim bring an uncommon clarity of expression to this work. They demonstrate an uncommon simultaneous depth and breadth of understanding. I have often, since they first asked, wished their cards were available so I could hand one to a client.And now I can.

I've been working with agile development and agile teams for a bit over 5 years now. I've taught the same lessons to hundreds of people and coached some of them through the transition. The thing that I always have to concentrate on is to remember to repeat the same basic principles again and again, as well as make sure that they understand the underlying values. There are no books on the market that address morality that way that this book does. Not the Bible. Not my university textbook on ethics. None. It's one thing to talk about moral issues and take sides with them, but it is another thing entirely to talk about solid moral principles that can guide you in making moral decisions based on reason instead of blind faith. This is a book that does the talking.If you want to find out what a religion or a moral philosophy is really made of, nothing will put it to a test more than a moral dilemma will, and this book is chock full of examples of real life moral dilemmas. Some of those moral dilemmas are things most people wouldn't even think of as moral dilemmas -- justice vs mercy for example. One dilemma I like (to paraphrase) was the one about the highway patrol officer who comes upon a truck wreck where the driver is irremovably pinned down in the cab and a fuel-fed fire is starting to blaze out-of-control. The driver asks the officer to kill him before he is fried alive. What would you do and how would it be a moral decision?It is not a perfect book, for example, there was the issue of what is truth. Truth and fact are not the same thing. Truth is whatever people *believe* to be fact, whether or not what they believe in really is a fact or not. Truth is not a reliable yardstick by which to gauge morality by. That might seem like nitpicking with words, but the most common cause of distress of clients in counseling is confusing facts with truth. Knowing the difference between the two is important to making proper moral decisions, otherwise you might be basing your decision on an illusion.It also didn't cover the issue of punishment. The topic of punishment often comes up in moral discussions as a deterrent from being immoral. If a person needs to be deterred by force from being immoral, does that deterred person become a moral person then, or are they a person only putting on an act of being moral, only to resort to immorality in private when nobody is looking and they can be the "real me"? So is there no other purpose of punishment, besides being a poor deterrent? Most philosophies of punishment I've heard have very immoral reasoning at their cores and therefore should be discussed in every discussion on moral or ethics. Therefore any religion or moral philosophy based on deterrent is an immoral religion or philosophy.

Great book! I would highly recommend this book for anyone studying criminal justice. It is very informative.

Not a bad read if you're looking into ways to break down moral decisions. The book provides a clear way to identify what kind of dilemma is in front of you and by the end provides the author's insight on which decisions seem to be most beneficial. However the criteria for decision making as the author hopes the readers to take in by the end of the book is at times muddled and subjective. Your idea of utilitarianism may be to save the bus full of children but my idea of it may be to save the one doctor who might go on to cure cancer. In the end all the reader is left with is the understanding that there are decisions which they will face with no right (or rather wrong) choice and that the choice they do make will define their ethical character. Whether you choose mercy over justice or the individual over society doesn't matter as long as you have the common sense to make the decision yourself and stand by it. Whether you need to read this book or not to make "tough" decisions depends on how hard set your core values are but you'll have nothing to lose from reading it.

Unlike Effective C++: 55 Specific Ways to Improve Your Programs and Designs, this book has not been updated or re-released. It is from the 90's and therefore it is seriously out of date with respect to modern C++. Many of the items don't really apply any more. For instance the usage of things like auto_ptr is discussed, one of the first standard implementations of a smart pointer which has long been replaced by shared_ptr and unique_ptr along with c++11 move semantics. Nevertheless, there were still a few items in here which are still relevant, and I learnt a few things and tricks that I didn't know.If you are interested in reading Scott Meyers, I would first read 55 Specific way, along with Modern C++, 40 ways and Effective STL 50 ways. If you want more after reading those three books, then perhaps read this.

This is the sequel to Scott Meyers' classic "Effective C++". When it came out (in 1996) "More Effective C++" complemented the material in "Effective C++" very well. Since then, "Effective C++" has been fully updated (3rd ed., 2005), therefore the two books are, strictly speaking, no longer complementary. Since its first publication, "More Effective C++" has only been changed in minor ways, mainly through the addition of footnotes (some of which go against the advice in the main text, see Items 14, 18, 20, & 26).The Good: as in his earlier volume, Meyers' writing is easygoing and occasionally funny, e.g. "If BookEntry's constructor throws an exception, pb will be the null pointer, so deleting it in the catch block does nothing except make you feel better about yourself." (Item 10). Despite the overlap with other books noted above (and below), some of the material is both important and not covered elsewhere, especially the stuff on proxy classes and efficiency. In the case of the latter, I really appreciated the table in Item 24 discussing the costs of virtual functions, multiple inheritance, virtual base classes, and RTTI. In a number of places, Meyers elucidates the established terminology of the C++ community. For example, the "return value optimization" you may have heard of amounts to returning constructor arguments instead of objects (Item 20). A notable exception to this terminological clarity is RAII: though he explains the concept, he does not mention the term itself. In typical "tips & tricks" fashion, Meyers presents a large number of useful tidbits of information, a few of which I mention below. Some of these are more or less obvious, but others are less straightforward: a) a sequence of conversions cannot contain more than one user-defined conversion (Item 5), b) postfix increment/decrement operators take an int argument (Item 6), c) passing a temporary object to a non-const reference parameter is not allowed for function calls, but it is for exceptions (Item 12), and d) creating a class template where the type template parameter apparently is never used can help you get separate copies of the static members when the template is instantiated for different types (Item 26).The Bad: in my opinion, after reading a detailed introductory book the main three things a C++ programmer needs practice with and further instruction on are: a) condensed lore on object-oriented programming, including design idioms and patterns, b) templates, encompassing template metaprogramming, and c) the Standard Template Library, meaning its containers, iterators, and algorithms. (With the coming of the new standard I guess one should add multithreading to this list). The problem is, this book was published in 1996, when all three of these concepts were new(ish) (e.g. Meyers discusses Singleton but he doesn't call it that) so they do not get the treatment they deserve here. Today, Meyers' own "Effective C++, 3rd edition" (2005) does a fine job of discussing templates in more detail as well as introducing a few design patterns. Even more information on these subjects, broken down into bite-sized chunks, can be found in Steve Dewhurst's "C++ Common Knowledge" (2005) and Herb Sutter's "Exceptional C++" (2000). Finally, Meyers' own "Effective STL" contains advice on the STL that is considerably broader and more detailed than what is included in the present tome. The book's time-dependence is obvious in other ways, too, ranging from trivial matters (e.g. in Item 28 the two classes derived from MusicProduct are CD and... Cassette), to topics that are now irrelevant at best (e.g. what to do if your compiler doesn't support new-style casts or the explicit keyword), and even including fundamental issues (e.g. so much attention to auto_ptr seems misplaced today, when we have access to things like shared_ptr and unique_ptr). Finally, in contradistinction to "Effective C++", most Items in "More Effective C++" do not end with a "Summary" section. Given that they are also longer, this interferes with the reader's ability to quickly bring to mind each Item's lessons.In a nutshell, I believe that this book is no longer the best "third book" on C++ (the first one being a solid introduction like the "C++ Primer" and the second one being none other than "Effective C++, 3rd edition"). It looks like the niche that this book filled when it came out has been taken over by more recent volumes, including Meyers' other works. With C++0x on the horizon and the barrage of new editions about to appear, this will only become more so. However, Meyers' writing is very good and his advice is authoritative, so I definitely did not regret reading this volume.Alex Gezerlis

I decided to break from my 3D game engine book marathon and go to something more fundamental. More Effective C++ by Scott Meyers is one of those books I have had on my wishlist for years but just hadn’t got around to reading yet. I had read the original book Effective C++ some years ago, and this sequel very much follows the same form. Though slightly dated now, it does cover a good amount of C++ design considerations that will show up in almost any decently complex C++ application.The book covers a lot of OOP (object oriented programming) concepts and designs, and also a lot of the trouble you can get into using C++ without fully understanding what you are doing. Some of the coverage includes how to use abstract base classes and virtual functions. Specifically Meyers talks about memory management issues with construction and destruction, temporary objects, passing by value versus pointer/reference, and overloading copy/assignment constructors. He also discusses problems with using exceptions, explains how to write a smart pointer class (which is now obsolete with C++11, but still good to understand the implementation), using proxy objects, how to do lazy evaluation, and some various odds and ends.Overall I found this to be a great text and very helpful, especially the discussion on inheritance and abstract base classes. If you really want to understand C++, warts and all, this should be a required text. However, please read the original title first, as it covers some more fundamental concepts than in the second text. Recommended.

This book is supposed to be an extension of Effective C++(Effective C++: 55 Specific Ways to Improve Your Programs and Designs (3rd Edition)). However, the most recent edition of Effective C++ is 10 years more modern (1995-2005). Effective C++ already covers a lot of More Effective C++, and with more current details. Additionally, More Effective C++'s comments on efficiency may no longer be as relevant with advances in compilers and computer architectures.Just a warning. The book is by no means a waste of time, but perhaps your time is better spent finding another resource, providing you already read Effective C++.

This is a set of do's and don'ts by one of the master C++ programmers / consultants that is still currently active. I believe anyone doing C++ coding will benefit from this book today and in the future. It is useable as a book -- reading it cover to cover or as a reference to refer back about that little thingy that you can't quite remember. Scott has three books very similar. I bought all of them several years ago and praise them to this day.

Good read for any regular C++ programmer. This book is written in a conversational and easy to read tone. It has many useful rules of thumb WITH justifications which I find to be a good format and easy to remember for the technically minded individual.
